Happy Monday beautiful people!
I’ve been slightly off my blogging game recently because… I just felt like I needed a break. I’m a massive believer in listening to your mind and body, so when your body tells your to rest, you rest. Which leads me nicely onto my next post – The importance of self care.
When you think of self care, you might think of a weekly face mask and a bubble bath and sometimes it is, but it is also soooo much more than that.
Self care basically means, knowing the importance of your needs and choosing them above all else.
We all lead very busy lives and unfortunately during our busiest times, self care is usually the first thing to take a back seat. We run ourselves ragged with obligations and completely forget about our obligation to ourselves.
Most people feel like they’re achieving something if they’re stretched to the point of exhaustion and that they’re failing if they’re not. There’s also this opinion that self care is almost selfish… Its ridiculous! Looking after yourself isn’t something you should do when you get to the end of your tether. You don’t just eat when you feel sick with hunger and you don’t just bath when you’re covered in dirt, so you shouldn’t only look after your mind when you’re close to a breakdown. Self care shouldn’t just be a treat when you get as spare hour or so, it is crucial and should come above all else.
Inputting a self care routine prevents stress, it keeps you motivated and enables you to think clearer. It is the simplest thing to do, you just need to schedule in the time and make it a priority.
Look after your body
Eating well and exercising regularly not only keeps your body healthy, it enables you to think clearer. Don’t abuse your body, you only get one! Which means not filling it with foods that make you feel sluggish and unmotivated. This doesn’t mean you have to only eat salads, I LOVE me some comfort food but its about balance. Just be mindful when you’re eating and notice the foods that make you feel good and those that make you feel bad. Healthy eating is something that seems to slip when we get busy, as does exercise but they are essential so make time for them. There are various exercise channels on YouTube, which means you don’t even need to leave the house to feel good. Do a quick 10 minute exercise, that’s enough to get your energy levels up and everyone can spare 10 minutes! If you can’t be bothered, do it for the after feeling… this is pretty much the only reason I ever do anything. If it will make you feel good, make yourself do it. You will never regret looking after your body.
Be kind to your mind
The most important of all, looking after your mind. Soooo many people neglect their mental health and accept stress as just a part of life but it is not meant to be that way.
If you’re feeling stressed and anxious, this is your minds way of telling you it needs a break. Don’t ignore it! For me, if I’m feeling stressed then I’ll take a long bath. I’ll get my crystals in there, put on some music and stay in there hours. If I feel like my head is too full, I’ll go for a long walk or do some exercise. Whatever it is that works for you, do it. Read a good book, get out in nature, spend time with people that make your heart feel all warm and fuzzy. Protect your mind, or it will give out on you and then you’ll be good for nothing. Again, don’t wait until you’re at breaking point to take some time out, schedule it in regularly so you never get to this point. Be aware of what triggers you and if you feel yourself taking a nose dive, act!
Look after your schedule
Protect your time and stop over planning. Before you even make plans, check your diary and make sure you have enough time for yourself. Don’t stretch yourself too thin. Get into the mindset that it is you first, everybody else second and NO that is not selfish! Sometimes being unproductive is the absolute best thing for your mental health, so do it. The world will not end because you cancelled your plans or missed a party. The heart wants what it wants, so if you need to take a day out and binge watch box sets, you go for it.
If there is one thing I never compromise on, its my self care, no matter how busy I am. How are you with looking after yourself? I would love to hear from you if you have a particular routine that works for you.
Have a fantastic week!!
