I am not naturally a morning person, but I have forced this routine on myself because I desperately want to be. I love a lay in and trust me I still have plenty, but on the days where I have to be organised, this has been a life saver.
I have so much more energy, I’m motivated and I actually look forward to getting out of bed… something I never thought I would say. This has rubbed off on my family as well, because I am just a much nicer person to be around.
You can’t control exactly how your day will go, but you can control the mindset you’re in to handle it. A positive morning routine really does set the tone for the rest of your day and start a snowball effect that just keeps on building.
If you find yourself waking up on the wrong side of the bed most of the time, try my simple routine for a more positive day;
Never put off until tomorrow, what you can do today
You don’t want to have to rummage around for your clothes first thing in the morning, so lay them out the night before. Make your lunch and have your bag packed. Make yourself some lemon water, put it in the fridge so you have a nice detox drink ready as soon as you wake up. Anything that saves you time in the morning, do it.
Wake up earlier
Running around like a headless chicken in the morning, does nothing but stress you out. It doesn’t make you go any quicker, because chances are you drop everything you pick up and can’t even see straight. Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier than usual, this gives you that extra time to get yourself together. Make the most of the precious bit of time you do have to yourself, in the morning. This means you can enjoy your morning coffee in bed, take your time getting ready and let yourself wake up properly. Be mindful in everything that you’re doing. Be present in what you are doing and only that, don’t think ahead to the next thing until you get there.
Smile and be grateful
“Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh
Smiling is scientifically proven to make your happier. It sends a message to your brain which tells it you’re feeling good, which in turn makes you feel good. So as soon as you open your eyes, smile.
Think of 3 things that you have to be grateful for, it doesn’t matter how small these are. You’ve lucky enough to have woken up in your nice warm bed, that’s a pretty big thing you have to be thankful for. Be thankful for the people that love you, the people you love, the eyes you have to open… anything you can think of. Let these things make you smile even more.
Choose positive thoughts
Get your mind prepared for the day. Choosing positive thoughts only, think about what you have to do. Imagine everything going the best way possible. Find something in your day, that you have to look forward to. Again, it doesn’t matter how small this is, mine is always lunch. No matter what it is, get really excited about it.
Make it a rule, to leave your phone until you’re completely ready and have time to spare. You do not need to see what everybody else is doing, before you’re even dressed in the morning. Unless it’s motivational, don’t do it.
Get your energy up
If you have the time, do a quick exercise. This doesn’t have to be anything crazy but something to get your heart rate up. It will make you feel more awake and clear your head. A quick 5 minute HIIT session is perfect and will make you feel strong for the day ahead.
Put on some music that makes you feel like you can take over the world. Get those energy levels up. You can also put on a positive affirmation video, there are great ones on YouTube that lift your mood. You want nothing but positive vibes in the morning. I usually put on a quick YouTube meditation and then sing my heart out to some good music.
Take a shower
This does three things, it gets your circulation going, it wakes you up and most importantly it washes away stress. Don’t just use it as a chance to get clean, really enjoy it and be mindful in what you’re doing. Let it relax you and make you happy.
Make your bed
This is so simple, but makes such a difference. Tidy house, tidy mind.. this will make you feel more organised and together. If you can have a little clear up before leaving the house, you won’t have to worry about doing it later, when you’ll be much more tired.
