I used to think Meditation was all just a bit of airy-fairy nonsense, never in a million years did I think I would ever use it.
Well, not only do I now use it, but it has turned out to be absolutely life changing for me. I have turned into one of those people who preaches meditation at every given opportunity, because it is amazing.
I used to be an over-thinker, I would lay awake for hours and my mind was on the go constantly!
I could talk about the benefits of meditation all day, they are just endless. But instead I’m going to talk about just a few of the ways that it has impacted my life.
When I’m meditating regularly, not only do I sleep… but I sleep good. I fall asleep as soon as I tell myself I want to fall asleep and I wake up refreshed. I used to hate going to bed, because I knew I’d be awake for ages but now I sleep like a baby. I’m even fairly motivated in the mornings… especially on Mondays!
I GOT REALLY OK WITH MYSELF
This is a big one… my self confidence improved! I used to be so critical of myself and these days I actually like who I am. My self doubt has gone and it has opened up a whole new world for me and the goals I have now feel obtainable. Self confidence isn’t thinking you’re the best thing since sliced bread, but it is knowing that you can achieve what you want. It’s amazing how much you can do, if you just get out of your own way.
I GOT REALLY OK WITH EVERYONE
I have always been a bit of a softie, but I am so much more compassionate than I was. I understand people more, I appreciate people more and I love people more. I always try to look for the best in people and find myself trying to understand why they do the things they do, instead of hating on them for it. I hate being judged, so I really do try not to judge others. We are all different, we all have our own journeys and we are all trying.
I KNOW WHAT I WANT
When you take your ego out of it, things become so much clearer. You’re able to see what you really want and what you really don’t. I realised that I wasn’t living the life I wanted, so I went to work at changing it. I got rid of any negative areas of my life, so now I am able to focus on just living a happy life, with the people that I love.
I HAVE MORE PATIENCE
This is a huge one for me because I’ve never been a particularly patient person. But I now am a ‘stop and smell the roses’ kind of girl. I started to appreciate the journey, instead of just rushing to get there. This has had a massive impact on my relationships and made me a better parent, which is everything really. I appreciate the little things in life, the little moments that before I just wouldn’t have taken the time to notice.
I HANDLE PROBLEMS BETTER
This is a probably a result of having a clearer head, being generally calmer and not caring as much.. but when a problem does arise, I just deal with it better. Instead of thinking ‘poor me’, I look at what I can learn, I deal with it and I move on. Things that would have been end of the world problems before, don’t get more than a few minutes thought now.
When you get rid of all the things in your life that have been weighing you down and you spend your time doing things that make you happy, its hard not to be motivated. I feel as though I’ve got a new lease of life now. I have more of a spring in my step and I’m able to get so much more done. I don’t make excuses for not doing things, if I want to do them.. I do.
The most important one of all. I have made a lot of changes in my life so I can’t give all the credit to meditation, but it was the thing that opened my eyes and started me on this journey of wanting to be better, so it gets a lot. These three little words sum it up perfectly… I AM HAPPY. For this reason and this reason alone, meditation has been the best thing I have ever done.
I am more positive, I have more fun, I smile more, I love more and I feel good.
You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day, unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour – Old Zen Saying
For me to keep this up for so long, says it all. Meditating is a habit to me now and when I don’t do it, I feel awful. It is not magic and you do need to put the work in, to get what you want out. I personally, don’t want to go back to the way that I was, so I will never stop doing it. I wouldn’t sacrifice my clear mind for anything.
Even if you just do 5 minutes a day, before you get out of bed. Place it firmly in your routine, like you would washing your face. You will thank yourself.
Life can be stressful and we just don’t take the time out as much as we should. Meditation gives you this time, that little bit of you time that you need for your mind and body to heal. You can’t carry all that stress around and expect it not to come out sooner or later, because it will.
